Troubleshooting a Frozen KitchenAid Refrigerator Ice Maker

It might seem paradoxical, but the ice maker mechanism in your KitchenAid refrigerator is susceptible to extreme cold and it might even freeze over if the thermostat isn't set correctly. You might find the ice maker produces hollow cubes if the temperature is too low. In most cases, these issues can be resolved in a few days by making the necessary changes to your refrigerator's set up.

    • 1

Check the thermostat settings on the appliance's digital control panel or the plastic dial in the freezer compartment. The freezer should be set in the region of 0 Fahrenheit or -18 Celsius; a few degrees higher or lower is acceptable. If your model does not have a digital temperature display purchase a freezer thermometer from your local hardware store. Raise the temperature if it is significantly lower than 0 F and allow a few days for the ice maker to slowly thaw.

    • 2

Keep the freezer compartment free of clutter and unnecessary or expired items. Packing the appliance full blocks the air circulation vents on the rear wall and causes the air temperature to become unusually cold. Make sure there is always enough air circulation room and allow time for the ice maker to defrost.

Ensure there is at least 1/2-inch of space at the top and sides, and a full inch of room at the back to supply enough room for air to circulate through the refrigerator and freezer. Placing the appliance in a tight corner may cause lower than normal temperatures. Consider moving the appliance to a warmer location if the room containing the appliance is unheated during the winter.
