Noisy Frigidaire Ice Maker

All Frigidaire ice makers make some type of noise every now and then, and most of the time it is completely normal. However, sometimes it means the ice maker needs to be serviced in some way. It is important to know what the different sounds coming from your ice maker mean so that you can fix any problems as needed.
  1. Ice Ejection

    • Ice makers typically produce about two to three pounds of ice a day as needed. When the cubes form and freeze, they fall in the bin below where you can access them. As the cubes fall, they make a tumbling or crashing sound when they land in the bin. This noise is more pronounced when the bin is empty. Either way, these noises are normal and shouldn’t cause concern.

    Water Entering the Ice Maker

    • As the ice maker begins to make more ice, you may hear some odd sounds, such as whooshing or hissing, as the machine signals that it needs water to fill the cube molds. These sounds are from the water valve opening and the subsequent water rushing through the tubes and into the molds. These sounds are another common occurrence in refrigerator ice makers.

    Water Supply is Off

    • Frigidaire ice makers create odd sounds when they try and operate when the water supply line isn’t properly hooked up or turned on. This can eventually cause problems for your ice maker if the problem isn’t dealt with quickly. Frigidaire refrigerators are manufactured and shipped with the ice maker in the “on” position, so that when the appliance is plugged in it will immediately start trying to create ice. If you do not have the water supply line plugged in, the machine will give off a loud chattering noise as a result. In such a case, you will need to manually turn the ice maker off and then connect the water line before restarting it.

    Other Sounds

    • Sometimes you hear sounds that you think are coming from the ice maker but are in fact coming from something close to it. When condensation begins to drip from the cooling coils, it can create a sizzling sound that may seem like it is coming from the ice maker. Any gurgling you hear may in fact be from the refrigerant cycling through the freezer. A low humming sound occurs when air is forced through the condenser fan and not from the nearby ice maker.
