My KitchenAid KSCS251 Is Leaking

The KitchenAid KSCS251 side-by-side refrigerator has many water features, including a water filter and water dispenser. Nevertheless, the refrigerator should not leak water. If water is on the floor in front of the refrigerator or water drips down the appliance's front or back, then some basic solutions and troubleshooting are in order.
  1. Dispenser

    • The ice and water dispenser on the refrigerator model's freezer can leak easily, especially if ice cubes become stuck in the chute or water drips from the water dispenser. The solution begins with removing all ice cubes that are stuck in the ice dispenser to prevent the ice cubes from melting and leaking, and holding a container under the water chute for a few seconds after water finishes dispensing. Lift out the dispenser catch tray, and empty out all its water because the tray has no dedicated drain and water can build up and overflow.

    Drain Tube

    • The drain tube in the freezer compartment of the KitchenAid refrigerator can become blocked, either with frost or food. That situation causes water to leak into the refrigerator or onto the floor. The drain tube is on the bottom of the freezer near the back. Use hot water to melt frost around the drain tube, and send a mixture of hot water and baking soda into the drain to help clear blockages. Repeating the procedure until the tube drains easily is necessary.

    Manual Defrost

    • Hot water, blocked air vents and refrigerator doors that are not closed completely also can cause the KitchenAid model to leak. Wiping the door's gasket clean with a damp cloth ensures the door can close fully. Perform a manual defrost if ice builds up repeatedly in the freezer section. A manual defrost requires removing all perishable food from the freezer and refrigerator, unplugging the refrigerator from its electrical outlet, propping open the freezer and refrigerator doors, setting towels down in front and back of the refrigerator and letting the freezer defrost for 24 hours. Then plug the refrigerator back into its electrical outlet, close the appliance's doors, and allow the refrigerator and freezer several hours to cool down before putting food inside their compartments.

    Repair

    • If the water leak continues even after checking the ice and water dispenser, cleaning out the drain tube and doing a manual defrost, contact KitchenAid. The water line might be damaged and leaking, or the thermostat might be broken, causing frost to build up and melt on a constant basis.
