How to Hook Up a Side-by-Side Fridge

When hooking up a side-by-side refrigerator, choose an area that has at least 3/8 inches of free space above the fridge and 1 inch of free space on each side. Refrigerators should also not be placed in direct sunlight or near a heat source such as a stove or dishwasher. Besides space requirements, the side-by-side refrigerator will need to be connected to a cold water line if it has an ice maker.

Things You'll Need

  • Copper tube
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Bucket
  • Steel clamp
  • Brass compression nut

Instructions

    • 1

Connect a copper tube to the cold water valve behind the side-by-side refrigerator. Use an adjustable wrench to secure the end of the copper tubing to the valve.

    • 2

Place the end of the copper tubing in a bucket. Turn the shut-off valve counterclockwise to open it and allow the water to run until it is clear. Then turn the water off.

    • 3

Remove the plastic cap from the water valve inlet at the bottom-rear of the fridge.

    • 4

Slide the steel clamp, followed by the brass compression nut and then the ferrule over the free end of the copper tube.

    • 5

Push the free end of the copper tube over the water inlet valve as far as it will go. Push the ferrule, brass compression and steel clamp nut down to the end of the tube over the inlet valve. Then turn the screw in the steel clamp with a Phillips screwdriver until tight to secure the tube to the valve.

    • 6

Coil the excess tubing up behind the refrigerator.

    • 7

Turn on the cold water valve, plug the fridge into the power outlet and then push the fridge into its permanent position.

    • 8

Close both refrigerator doors. Then unfasten the side clips on the front toe grille using your hands. Open the doors and push down on the toe grille until it pops off. Set the toe grille aside. Close the doors.

    • 9

Raise or lower the refrigerator. Insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the roller adjustment screw -- often labeled "Raise" or "Roller" -- at the bottom of the fridge, and turn it left or right to raise or lower the rollers supporting the fridge.

    • 10

Remove the set screws with a wrench, which lock the doors' height, from the bottom door hinges using a wrench.

    • 11

Lower or raise the refrigerator or freezer door until they are even by turning the adjustment screw to the left or right with an adjustable wrench. Then reinstall the set screws to lock in the doors' height.

    • 12

Open both doors and replace the toe grille. Then close both doors and allow the side-by-side refrigerator to get cold.
