How to Replace a Solenoid in a Frigidaire Gallery Refrigerator

The Frigidaire Gallery line of refrigerators contains an automatic ice maker that connects to an external water hose. The hose attaches to the back of the Frigidaire, where water for the ice maker flows through a valve control. The electronic component known as a solenoid controls the valve, sending signals to open and close the mechanism when the ice in the freezer falls below a certain level or when the bin is full. When the solenoid stops working, the ice maker will not harvest properly. Change out the solenoid and valve assembly yourself to save money on a repair bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Frigidaire Gallery power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Twist the knob on the water supply hose clockwise to shut off flow to the Frigidaire.

    • 3

Pull the Gallery away from the wall to access the back panel where the hose connects to the appliance.

    • 4

Remove the bolts on the plate surrounding the water hose on the back of the Gallery. Take off the plate and slide it up the hose and out of the way.

    • 5

Unscrew the nut where the hose attaches to the valve, using the adjustable wrench. Pull off the hose and place it in a plastic container to catch dripping water.

    • 6

Slide off the two wires on the solenoid terminals. The terminals on the solenoid are on top of the water valve. Each wire has a clip that pulls straight off of the solenoid.

    • 7

Remove the bolt holding the solenoid and valve assembly to the refrigerator chassis. This part can now be removed from the appliance.

    • 8

Attach the new solenoid and valve assembly to the chassis, using the bolt and nut driver.

    • 9

Connect the two wire clips to the new solenoid terminals.

    • 10

Reattach the water hose to the threaded pipe on the water valve, tightening with the wrench.

    • 11

Connect the cover plate to the back of the Gallery using the bolts removed in Step 4.

    • 12

Unscrew the cutoff knob on the water hose.

    • 13

Plug in the Gallery's power cord and slide the appliance to its original location.
