How to Fix a Broken Water Line at the Hinge on a Refrigerator Door

Many new refrigerators come equipped with a water dispenser. The water dispenser connects to the water supply underneath the kitchen sink. A hose runs from the water supply to the inlet valve on the refrigerator. The water valve is located under the hinge of the fridge on some models. A hole in the water line will cause the hose to leak all over the floor. If you notice puddles on the hinge side of the refrigerator, you may need to replace the water line.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the handle of the water supply clockwise to shut off the water to the fridge. Place a cup under the water dispenser and drain out the line.

    • 2

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall.

    • 3

Tilt the refrigerator toward the back wall. Set a wood block underneath each side of the fridge to keep it tilted back.

    • 4

Pull on the quick-connect coupling where the hose meets the coupling, gripping the rubber ring with a pair of pliers. Pull out to remove the hose.

    • 5

Cut the leaky tube back behind the leak with a utility knife.

    • 6

Slide a quick-connect coupling onto the cut hose.

    • 7

Measure the distance between the new quick connect-coupling and the coupling near the door hinge. Cut a length of plastic hose to fit with the utility knife.

    • 8

Insert the new hose into the couplings.

    • 9

Lower the fridge back to the floor and plug it in. Turn on the water supply.
