How to Measure Cubits for a Refrigerator

The cubit is not a unit of measurement used today. It was a unit of measurement during the time of the ancient Egyptians and has a few mentions in the Bible. Archeologists found wooden rods with marks, similar to a ruler, and determined their use for length measurements. The cubit is often confused with the term cubic, a measurement of volume for appliances, such as the refrigerator. When purchasing a refrigerator, the description states how many cubic feet it holds. One cubic foot equals 1728 cubic inches, which is is a measure of volume. Measuring cubic feet requires measuring the inside of the freezer and main body of the refrigerator.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door of the freezer and remove any food inside.

    • 2

Measure the length of the inside of the freezer from one side wall to the other. Write down the measurement in inches.

    • 3

Measure the height of the inside of the freezer from the bottom to the top. Write down the measurement in inches.

    • 4

Measure the depth of the inside of the freezer from the front to the back wall. Write down the measurement in inches.

    • 5

Multiply the length, height and depth measurements together to determine how many cubic inches the freezer has. Divide the cubic inches measurement by 1728 to determine the cubic feet of the freezer.

    • 6

Open the door of the refrigerator and remove any food inside. Remove all shelves and drawers so the refrigerator is empty.

    • 7

Measure the length, height and depth of the refrigerator in the same manner as you did for the freezer. Multiply the measurements and divide that number by 1728 to determine cubic feet.

    • 8

Add the cubic feet of the freezer to the cubic feet of the refrigerator body to determine the total cubic feet for the refrigerator.
