How to Change the Water Line Inside the Refrigerator Door

New refrigerators often have a water dispenser installed in the door. The dispenser requires a water line that runs from under the kitchen sink to the door. The water lines are usually made of thin copper tubing and connect to the back of the fridge with a compression nut. A plastic water line runs inside of the refrigerator door that may need replacing if it starts to leak. This requires separating the door.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the water supply line at the shut-off valve underneath the kitchen sink. Press down on the water dispenser lever to drain any remaining water from the line.

    • 2

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall.

    • 3

Pull back on the door seal and loosen the nuts holding the door seal in place, using the nut driver.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the plastic back panel of the freezer door in place. If the screws are covered by plastic tabs, pull up on the tabs. Remove the back panel from the freezer door.

    • 5

Loosen the nuts from each side of the water line and remove it from the dispenser.

    • 6

Place the coupling nut of the new water line onto the water inlet valve and screw it on with the wrench. Place the other coupling nut onto the water supply line and tighten.
