The cooling system in your Whirlpool refrigerator is powered by a motor, known as a compressor. This compressor is started by a component known as a compressor relay. This relay is located at the back of the refrigerator. If your refrigerator won't cool at all it is likely the result of a bad relay. To access this part, you will have to remove the outer metal cover.

Unplug your refrigerator and move it so that you have access to the rear panel.

Remove the screws on the panel at the bottom of the refrigerator with your Phillips screwdriver.

Locate the relay box. This will be a metal box with wiring coming out of it. It will be located to the side of the compressor.

Remove the screws on the sides of the relay box and remove the relay box cover.
