Noisy Refrigerator Condensers

Refrigerators routinely make humming noises, but sometimes a louder grunting or squealing sound can indicate a problem. One possible source of irregular fridge noises is the condenser, and more specifically, the condenser fan. Fortunately, repairing a faulty condenser fan is simple compared to more expensive and complicated problems like a broken compressor.
  1. Identifying Condenser Noise

    • If noise is coming from the outer backside of your refrigerator, the possible culprit could be the condenser fan, the compressor, or the defrost timer. The condenser fan is usually located behind a thin metal panel at the back of the fridge. Listen to see if you can pinpoint the noise to that location. If it is clear that the noise is coming from the condenser, you need to test the condenser to best determine how to quell the noise.

    Cleaning the Condenser Fan

    • Condenser fans tend to pick up household dirt and dust and that grime can also be a cause of condenser noise. Turn off the power to the fridge and remove the plate that conceals the condenser fan. You will immediately be able to see any debris that may cause the fan to malfunction and create noise. Pick off any large pieces of lint or dust and then carefully clean with a soft bristle brush. Replace the back plate and plug the refrigerator in to see if the noise has stopped.

    Testing the Motor

    • If cleaning the condenser fan doesn't solve the noise problem, test the fan's motor. With the fridge unplugged and the back plate removed, manually turn the blades of the fan with your fingers or the tip of a screwdriver. If the blades do not turn easily or the motor gives resistance, you need to replace the motor. Motors are relatively inexpensive and may be replaced either by yourself or a repair professional.

    Risks of Faulty Condensers

    • A faulty condenser causes more problems than just creating an annoying noise. A broken condenser will prevent the fridge from cooling properly, which may result in spoiled food. Even if you do not hear a noise coming from the condenser, keep it running smoothly by cleaning it out at least once a year and regularly checking for pests like mice that could damage the fan blades or motor.
