How to Replace an Ice Dispenser Door for a Maytag

Maytag French-door and side-by-side refrigerator models have two separate doors: one for the fresh food compartment and one for the freezer. The ice and water dispenser – mounted to the outside of the freezer – provides rapid access to fresh filtered water and cubed ice. You might want to remove the ice dispenser door if you are moving the refrigerator through a tight space or if there is damage to exterior of the appliance.

Things You'll Need

  • 5/16-inch, 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch socket wrench
  • #2 Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Assistant

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water supply and unplug the refrigerator. You will be working with potentially live electrical parts, and there is a risk of shock if you simply turn off the cooling at the control panel. Empty the ice dispenser door shelves and remove the plastic ice cube bucket.

    • 2

Crouch down and place a hand on each end of the plastic toe grille below the main doors. Pull the grille forward to detach it from the refrigerator.

    • 3

Disconnect the water line behind the toe grille; holding the water line steady, twist the black locking collar clockwise. The line separates into two pieces.

    • 4

Remove the cover screw on top of the refrigerator to reveal the hinge screws for the ice dispenser door. Take out the three remaining bolts and hinge plate while an assistant supports the weight of the door. Break apart the wiring connection with a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 5

Carefully lift the ice dispenser door off the lower hinge and place it to one side. Make sure all the packing material has been removed from the replacement.

    • 6

Lift the new door onto the lower hinge and replace the hinge plate. Quickly tighten the supporting screws back in place so the appliance supports the weight of the door. Snap the wiring connections together and replace the hinge cover.

    • 7

Screw together the water connection at the bottom of the appliance and push the toe grille back until it clicks. Re-connect the water supply and plug in the refrigerator. The new door is ready for use.
