Fixing the Door Stop Hinge on the GE Refrigerator

Depending on where in the kitchen your refrigerator stands, the swinging refrigerator door could hit adjacent counters or walls, damaging them or the door itself. All General Electric refrigerators have built-in door stops. Located in the bottom door hinge, the door stop allows the door to open wide enough for normal use without swinging back far enough to hit the wall or other adjacent objects. Replace a broken GE refrigerator door stop by replacing the bottom door hinge assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the refrigerator door shelves. Turn the refrigerator off.

    • 2

Unscrew the door hinge cover at the top of the door with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift it away and set it aside.

    • 3

Fit the end of the nut driver over over one of the two hex-edge screws on the top door hinge. Twist the nut driver counterclockwise until both hex edge screws come free. Pull off the top door hinge.

    • 4

Lift the door up until its bottom separates from the lower hinge pin. Lay the door down on a flat work surface.

    • 5

Unscrew both of the hex edge screws holding the door stop and closing cam to the door. Remove the door stop. The closing cam will also come free.

    • 6

Align the new door stop with the hex edge screw receptacles. Fit the hex edge screw to the far right through the door stop and into the corresponding screw receptacle. Secure it in place with the nut driver.

    • 7

Hold the closing cam over the left screw receptacle. Push the door stop up until the holes in the closing cam align with those in the door stop. Fit the remaining hex edge screw through both the door stop and the closing cam. Screw it into the door receptacle with the nut driver.

    • 8

Fit the door back in place over the lower hinge pin. Replace the top door hinge and secure it with the two hex edge screws.

    • 9

Fit the door hinge cover over the hinge. Screw it in place with the screwdriver.
