Ice Maker Fill Line Is Frozen

When an ice maker fill line freezes, it slows or even prevents water from flowing through the line. This often stops ice production, and the only way for the ice maker to resume working is to repair or thaw out the line. Most often, the cause of a frozen fill line is due to slow water flow, which can happen for a variety of reasons.
  1. Incorrect Installation

    • When the ice maker fill line fills with water, the valve opens to allow water inside and closes after it receives enough water. The water flow forces the water in and out of the tube. If the water is unable to flow properly through the fill line due to improper installation, the water rests in the tub where it can freeze and cause an ice blockage.

    Water Issues

    • Hard water deposits or other debris in the water line can prevent water from flowing through the tube, leaving water in the tube that can freeze. Water flows through a filter before it enters the fill line. If the filter is not changed as recommended by the manufacturer, it may become clogged. A clogged filter reduces the water pressure level of the water flowing through it so that when it flows through the fill line, some of the water may remain in the line.

    Parts

    • An ice maker fill line requires a specific valve to operate properly. Some ice makers are equipped with a self-piercing valve, which can restrict water flow to the lines by introducing debris into the water when the valve's needle pierces the water pipe. The needle can also block the water flow if it gets stuck inside the valve.

    Quick Fix

    • Besides fixing the underling issues causing the ice maker fill line to freeze, thawing out the line is a temporary solution. Remove all of the ice maker components, including the ice bucket, in order to locate the fill line. Some fill lines are behind the ice maker while others are hidden behind a compartment. Moisten a towel with hot water and wrap it around the line to thaw it out. The line should thaw in as quickly as 10 minutes.
