How to Replace a Seal on a Refrigerator With Freezer Door

The door seal on your refrigerator is vital to ensure the temperature of both the freezer and fresh food compartments remain as set on the control panel. Each door has a seal, also known as a gasket, that surrounds the perimeter of the door. The gasket is made of hard rubber, and it compresses when the door is closed. As the appliance ages, the rubber in the gasket will deteriorate, causing the seal to fail. When this occurs, the internal temperature of the refrigerator will rise, as the cold air is not completely contained inside. To repair the refrigerator, remove the existing gasket and install a new one.

Instructions

  1. Common Door Gasket

    • 1

Open the door containing the gasket you are replacing.

    • 2

Grasp the gasket by the corner with one hand, brace the door with the other hand, and pull firmly on the gasket to remove it from the gasket channel. Continue pulling firmly until the gasket is completely removed from the door.

    • 3

Remove any food debris from the gasket channel using a dry cloth, if needed.

    • 4

Align the new door gasket with the gasket channel, and firmly press the gasket into the gasket channel.

    • 5

Continue pressing the gasket into the gasket channel until the entire gasket is installed on the refrigerator door.

    Frigidaire-Style Door Gasket

    • 6

Open the door containing the gasket you would like to replace.

    • 7

Peel the inner portion of the gasket away from the door, toward the outer portion of the door to reveal the screws below the gasket.

    • 8

Loosen each screw one-quarter of a turn around the entire perimeter of the door.

    • 9

Pull the door gasket out from between the door and door liner, and discard the gasket.

    • 10

Align the new door gasket with the door, and tuck the rear portion of the gasket between the door and the door liner.

    • 11

Tighten the screws around the entire perimeter of the door gasket to secure the gasket to the door.
