How to Install a Flexible Hose on a Refrigerator

Refrigerators with an automatic ice maker or water fountain must be connected to a water supply valve, which provides cold water to the appliance. The water is transferred from the supply valve to the water inlet valve on the rear of the refrigerator through a water supply hose. The water supply hose is made of either copper or flexible plastic, and it requires a compression nut and a ferrule to create a water-tight seal on each valve.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a compression nut on one end of the flexible plastic water hose, with the threading facing the end of the hose. A refrigerator typically has two compression nuts, although the water supply hose is sold separately.

    • 2

Insert a ferrule, which is included with the refrigerator, into the end of the flexible water supply hose.

    • 3

Insert the end of the water supply hose into the water supply valve. Tighten the compression nut on the end of the valve by hand. Once tight, give the nut a one-quarter turn by hand to tighten further.

    • 4

Place the opposite end of the water supply hose into the sink or into a bucket, then turn on the water supply valve. Allow the water to flow through the water supply hose until it runs clear, which flushes the line of any debris.

    • 5

Insert the compression nut on the other end of the hose, then insert the ferrule.

    • 6

Connect the water line to the water inlet valve on the rear of the refrigerator, then tighten the compression nut by hand. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the compression nut an additional one-quarter turn.

    • 7

Turn on the water supply valve and inspect the connections for leaks. Tighten as needed.
