How to Disassemble a Freezer Door

Whether you are replacing parts, such as a broken door hinge or malfunctioning ice maker, or simply trying to move your refrigerator and freezer unit through a tight space, you might need to disassemble your freezer door and detach it from the refrigeration unit. The two basic types of freezer units are freezers that sit side by side with the refrigerator and freezers located beneath the refrigerator. The process for taking apart your freezer door may differ slightly depending on the brand of freezer you own.

Instructions

  1. Side-by-Side Freezer

    • 1

Remove all food products from the freezer door's shelves. Unplug the appliance.

    • 2

Slide the freezer shelves out of the door. Set them aside.

    • 3

Pull off the kickplate located at the bottom of the freezer – exposing the water tube for your ice maker (if you have one). Fit an open-ended wrench around the plastic connecting module. Squeeze the connecting module until the water tube comes free.

    • 4

Unscrew the hinge cover at the top of the freezer with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the hinge cover, exposing the wiring harness and metal hinge beneath.

    • 5

Grasp the wiring harness by its connector. Squeeze both sides of the wiring connector while pulling in opposite directions to disconnect it.

    • 6

Unscrew the bolts holding the metal hinge in place with a nut driver.

    • 7

Open the freezer door slightly. Lift the freezer door until it detaches from the vertical bottom hinge. You can now make the necessary repairs or move the appliance.

    Bottom Freezers

    • 8

Unplug the freezer. Open the freezer door all the way.

    • 9

Pull the freezer basket upward, detaching it from the freezer door frame. Remove the basket.

    • 10

Cut the rubber door seal away from the interior freezer door with a utility knife.

    • 11

Unscrew the railing that attaches the freezer door to the main freezer unit with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 12

Pull the door's attached railings from the main freezer unit's rail assemblies on both sides. Remove the door.
