How to Replace a Solenoid in a Frigidaire Gallery Refrigirator

The solenoid in a Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator is part of the valve assembly that works with the automatic ice maker. The solenoid activates and deactivates the valve when the ice maker needs water to start a fresh harvest. When the ice maker fills with sufficient water for a new cycle, the solenoid closes the water valve. The solenoid and water valve are joined as one component. Replacing the unit takes less than an hour using basic tools. Buy a replacement from Frigidaire or an appliance repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist the round knob on the water hose behind the Frigidaire or below the kitchen sink to halt water flow to the appliance while you replace the solenoid and valve.

    • 2

Pull the Frigidaire forward to reach the back of the appliance. Unplug the power cord.

    • 3

Use a nut driver to extract the bolts in the small access door at the back of the Frigidaire where the water hose enters the appliance. Pull off the door.

    • 4

Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew and remove the copper nut on the end of the water hose from the old valve.

    • 5

Squeeze the clamp on the hose attached to the valve, using pliers, to release the hose.

    • 6

Pull off the wires from the two electrodes on the solenoid, which is on top of the valve. The wires have crimped connectors that slide off.

    • 7

Unscrew the bolt holding the water valve and solenoid bracket to the frame of the Frigidaire. You can now remove the unit.

    • 8

Slip the wire connectors onto the electrodes on the new solenoid.

    • 9

Push the hose onto the pipe on the side of the valve, then squeeze the clamp with pliers and slide it up the hose onto the valve pipe. Release the pliers to lock the hose in place.

    • 10

Attach the unit the the Frigidaire frame with the bracket and the bolt removed in Step 7.

    • 11

Twist the copper nut on the end of the water hose onto the intake nozzle on the new valve and tighten it with the wrench.

    • 12

Connect the door cover to the back of the Frigidaire using bolts and the nut driver.

    • 13

Plug in the power cord and slide the Frigidiare to the desired spot in the kitchen.

    • 14

Unscrew the knob for the water hose valve to restore water to the Frigidaire.
