Problems With a Refrigerator Causing Milk Spoilage

If milk is stored in a functional refrigerator, it should last until the sell-by date printed on the bottle. If the milk spoils before this date, you may be having temperature problems with your refrigerator. This doesn't necessarily mean that your fridge is on the fritz. In fact, there are quick ways to troubleshoot the problem that don't involve replacing any refrigerator parts.

Things You'll Need

  • Thermometer
  • Vacuum cleaner with hose attachment

Unplug your refrigerator then plug it back in to test the power supply. This will also reset the fridge system and could resolve a temperature problem. If there is no power to the fridge at all, locate the breaker box. Flip the breaker off and then back on to reset it or replace the fuse if it is bad.

Open the refrigerator door and check the temperature dial. This is typically located at the back of the refrigerator. If milk is spoiling quickly, it could be the result of a high temperature in the fridge. Turn the temperature dial to set the temperature to a lower setting. You can use a thermometer to verify the internal temperature of the fridge.

Check the gasket on the door of the fridge. This is the pliable lining on the inside rim of the door. If a section of gasket has ripped or pulled out, cold air will leak out of the fridge. This could cause the inside temperature to rise. You can remove the gasket by prying it out with a flat head screwdriver then removing the screws that hold it in place. Replace it with a gasket from the manufacturer.

Remove the vent panel on the bottom of the front of the refrigerator to access the condenser coils. Liquid coolant circulates through these coils and keeps the fridge cool. If the coils are dirty, it could prevent the coils from functioning properly. Use the hose attachment on a vacuum cleaner to clean the dust and dirt from under the fridge then replace the vent cover.
