How to Reverse the Door Swing on a Frigidaire FRT21HS6J

The Frigidaire FRT21HS6J is a top-freezer refrigerator with stainless steel doors. The doors are installed at the factory to open toward the right side. Depending on where the refrigerator is installed, it may be more convenient to reverse the doors so they open toward the left. The doors of the Frigidaire FRT21HS6J must be removed in order to reverse the direction they swing.

Instructions

  1. Door Removal

    • 1

      Pull the toe grille away from the base of the refrigerator to remove it.

      Lift off the top hinge cover. Remove the two screws holding the top hinge in place, and then lift the top hinge off.

      Lift the freezer door off the center hinge pin.

    • 4

      Unscrew the center hinge pin with the adjustable wrench.

      Lift the refrigerator door off the bottom hinge.

      Remove the screws holding the center hinge and shim in place. Remove the shim and hinge.

      Remove the outside screws on the opposite side of the refrigerator cabinet. Install the center hinge in their place.

      Remove the screws holding the bottom hinge in place. Install the bottom hinge on the opposite side of the cabinet.

      Remove the bottom hinge pin with the adjustable wrench. Set the hinge pin into the hinge on the other side.

    Reversal and Reinstallation

    • 10

      Remove the screws holding the handle to the bottom of the freezer door. Slide the small trim piece on the top of the handle straight up to remove it. Remove the screw from the top of the handle, and then remove the handle.

      Peel the nameplate sticker off of the freezer door. Affix the sticker over the hole that connected the top of the handle.

      Position the handle on the other end of the freezer door. Install the screws that hold it in place. Replace the plastic trim piece on the top of the handle.

      Remove the two screws connected to the top of the refrigerator door handle. Remove the single screw at the base of the handle. Lift the handle off.

      Pull out the hole plugs from the opposite side of the refrigerator door. Plug them into the holes on the opposite side.

      Position the handle on the opposite side of the door. Install the screws that hold it in place.

      Place the refrigerator door onto the bottom hinge pin. Screw the center hinge pin to the top of the door. Tighten the hinge pins with the wrench.

      Set the freezer door onto the center hinge pin. Install the top hinge, and tighten the screws.

      Press the toe grille back into position.
