How to Attach a Nut & Ferrule to a Water Line in a Refrigerator

A ferrule and nut combine to ensure a refrigerator waterline does not leak under pressure. The ferrule resembles an elongated tapered washer that has an inner diameter that matches the outer wall diameter of the refrigerator waterline. When the nut compresses the ferrule, it seats in the matching taper of the refrigerator connection and seals the waterline connection. Installing both components in the correct way and in the correct order will ensure the connection remains sealed when the water is turned on.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the refrigerator away from the wall. Unplug the electrical cord.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the access panel to the back of the refrigerator by turning each one counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver. Some refrigerator models may not have a panel covering the water connection.

    • 3

Slide the nut over the end of the waterline with the threads aimed toward the line’s open end. Slide the ferrule on to the waterline. Stop pushing the ferrule when it sits back 1/2 inch from the end of the line. Ensure the thicker end of the ferrule aims toward the inside of the nut.

    • 4

Push the end of the waterline into the inlet opening located on the back of the refrigerator. Slide the ferrule tight to the inlet opening.

    • 5

Push the nut to the threads of the inlet connection. Turn the nut clockwise — by hand — until it seats to the connection. Lock the nut to the connection by turning it clockwise with an adjustable wrench.

    • 6

Plug the refrigerator into the wall outlet. Turn on the water valve to charge the system with water. Move the refrigerator back into position.
