How to Repair the Ice Maker on a GE Profile Refrigerator

General Electric (GE) was founded by inventor Thomas Alva Edison in 1890 as the Edison General Electric Company. Over time GE has developed into a global brand and is one of the largest corporations in the world today. GE Profile refrigerators are available in side-by-side, top- and bottom-mounted versions. All Profile refrigerators offer a built-in ice maker. If you need to troubleshoot issues with your GE Profile refrigerator's ice maker, the process requires a bit of trial and error, along with some basic handyman skills.

Check the switch on your GE Profile ice maker if it stops producing ice. The switch can be accidentally moved to the "Off" position. If this is the case, set the switch to the "On" position and see if this resolves the problem.

    • 2

Verify that the ice maker is plugged in. Your ice maker may have a separate electrical plug that should be inserted into the appropriate outlet at the back of the freezer compartment or along the left-hand wall at the rear. Without power to the unit, the ice maker will not produce ice.

    • 3

Inspect the wall-mounted water supply cutoff valve that leads to your refrigerator. If the valve is in the "Off" position or is not open fully, this can cause the flow of water to your ice maker to slow or cease altogether. If the ice maker is on and the water supply is off, you may also hear a continuous buzzing sound from the freezer compartment. Turn the valve in a clockwise direction to close it completely then turn it completely counterclockwise.

    • 4

Check that ice cubes have not become stuck in any part of the ice maker. Ice can become wedged in the moving parts of the ice maker, preventing it from producing ice. Use your hands to remove the ice or a butter knife or other blunt object.

    • 5

Remove excess ice cubes from the bin or redistribute them so they lay evenly. If too many ice cubes pile up, they may interfere with the ice maker cutoff sensor, causing production to cease. Reposition the ice cube bin if the ice maker makes more ice than the bin can hold. Poor alignment can cause the ice cube sensor to fail.

    • 6

Wait 24 hours if the refrigerator was just installed. The ice maker must reach its target temperature before it begins to produce ice. Due to considerations, including air in the water lines, new plumbing and the overall freezer temperature, a realistic estimate for normal performance is around 24 hours.

Contact GE Appliances' customer support if none of the above remedies is successful. You may have a defective or broken ice maker, which requires replacement by an authorized service technician.
