Water filters for refrigerators are made from membranes that filter out unwanted particles while allowing water to pass by. Over time, these particles can build up into layers of sediment. Clean water can run easily through a filter for months, but over time, the sediment builds up on the filter. The ice maker will then stop making ice or will not make as much ice as it did previously.
In order to keep your Frigidaire properly maintained, replace the filter regularly, every six months. Even if you do not replace it this often, any decrease in ice maker activity should be a warning that you have a clogged filter and need to install a new one.
Proper water pressure for the ice maker should be between 40 and 120 psi in order for the unit to function properly. Any drop below the 40-psi mark can lead to problems. In order to test your water pressure, test your tap water outlet on the refrigerator, using both the filter and using the filter bypass plug. A properly working filter should allow 13 to 14 ounces of water to flow out in about 20 seconds. If the filter is slower but the bypass works correctly, the problem is the filter itself.
Your Frigidaire refrigerator has a supply valve that allows water to flow into the unit whenever it needs to create more ice. This supply valve can become clogged just like the filter, and the symptoms will be similar. If the water pressure and ice maker problems persist even when you are bypassing your filter, you may have a problem with the supply valve, which can be replaced to remove the clog.
