How to Replace a Kenmore Refrigerator Door Cam Riser

Kenmore refrigerators are designed with self-closing doors. This feature helps when your hands are full and you have to use your elbow to shut the door. It is also beneficial if you have a small child who doesn’t quite have the strength to shut the refrigerator door. The hard plastic construction of the riser can wear down and break over time. This can cause the door to stick open, become hard to close, or slip and scrape on the bottom hinge. You can return your refrigerator door to its original operation by replacing the door cam riser.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the food from your Kenmore refrigerator or freezer, depending on which riser you need to replace, and place the food in a cooler. You must remove the door for the repair, and using a cooler helps keep your food safe. Turn off the refrigerator or freezer to stop the motor and fans from operating.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the hinge beauty cover on top of the refrigerator. The plastic beauty cover is designed to blend with the exterior of the refrigerator and hide the metal hinge. Take the cover off the hinge, and set it aside along with the screws.

    • 3

Remove the hex head screws holding the hinge to the Kenmore refrigerator with a 5/16-inch nut driver. Lift the hinge from the top of the refrigerator and out of the door. Set aside the hinge and screws.

    • 4

Open the Kenmore refrigerator door, and then lift it up off the bottom hinge. Lay the door on a sturdy work surface.

    • 5

Look along the bottom of the door for the doorstop and the cam riser. The cam riser sits between the bottom of the door and the doorstop. The opening on the cam sits over the hinge and has a raised, rough surface.

    • 6

Loosen, but do not remove, the hex head screw on the doorstop furthest from the hinge hole in the refrigerator. Remove the hex head screw from the doorstop closest to the hinge hole. This screw threads through the doorstop and the cam riser.

    • 7

Pull the damaged cam riser from beneath the doorstop. Slide the replacement cam under the doorstop.

    • 8

Reinsert the hex head screw through the hole in the doorstop and the screw hole in the replacement cam riser. Line the hinge hole in the cam up with the hinge hole in the refrigerator door. Tighten both hex head screws on the bottom of the refrigerator door.

    • 9

Lift the Kenmore refrigerator door onto the bottom hinge. Shut the door and insert the top hinge into the door.

    • 10

Insert the hex head screws through the hinge and into the top of the refrigerator. Tighten the screws with the nut driver.

    • 11

Place the beauty cover over the hinge. Secure the cover with the screws you previously removed.

    • 12

Turn on the freezer or refrigerator. Move the food from the cooler back into your Kenmore refrigerator or freezer.
