Frigidaire Freezer Top Refrigerator Door Does Not Close

A Frigidaire refrigerator freezer combination depends on the refrigeration chamber and freezer box remaining sealed most of the time. Although the refrigerator features methods to combat the occasional intrusion of warm air, a door that will not close can overwhelm the ability of a refrigerator to keep things cold. A freezer door may not close properly for several reasons.
  1. Overload

    • Top mounted freezer chambers feature less space than the average side-by-side refrigerator and freezer combination. If the freezer door will not close properly, ensure that the goods in the freezer are not blocking the door from sealing properly. Even the thin plastic of freezer bags can stop a door from sealing properly. Overloading the door can also cause problems, especially if the refrigerator leans forward or the goods on the door are dense and heavy materials.

    Gasket

    • Like the refrigerator door, Frigidaire freezer chambers are sealed not only by interlocking plastic lining but also by a rubbery gasket that surrounds the rim of the door. This gasket holds the door in place with suction. While flexible and soft at first, the gasket hardens and becomes rigid with time and use. Once rigid, the gasket will not keep the door shut properly and can open the freezer to invasion from outside heat. Unfortunately, this process is irreversible and the gasket is not repairable, but the freezer gasket can be replaced. Contact the manufacturer for proper replacement options for your model refrigerator.

    Level

    • Frigidaire refrigerators, like most kitchen appliances, are designed for use on a level surface. Because of this, much of the ability of the refrigerator to keep its doors shut is based on the refrigerator’s level position. While the door gasket can handle slight forward angles, serious imbalance can overstress the gaskets and open the freezer door. In fact, the door in a top mounted freezer-style refrigerator is more susceptible to a level imbalance than the refrigerator door, since it is located farther from the center of gravity. Adjusting the position of the refrigerator to make it level will solve this problem.

    Misalignment

    • Of course, the freezer door will not close if it is improperly set on its hinges. Check the hinges of for bends or breaks and check the door in the closed position for openings cause by misalignment. Repairing any damage to the hinges or the door will solve this problem.
