Frigidaire Ice Maker Stuck in Crush Mode

While it's disconcerting when flakes of crushed ice come out of a Frigidaire ice maker that's set to cubed ice, it's not necessarily a sign of a larger problem. After changing settings, an ice maker may continue to dispense the previous type of ice selected. The crushed ice will go away on its own, but if not, you can fix the ice maker yourself with no special tools or skills.
  1. Symptoms

    • When your Frigidaire ice maker is stuck on a setting, you can flip the ice switch from cube to crush without making a difference. The ice maker releases crushed ice, not the cubes you want. While the ice is perfectly fine, fixing the jam restores full functionality to your unit.

    Considerations

    • If you recently switched modes, you may continue to get crushed ice for a bit. Crushed ice flakes that have built up around the bottom of the bin are released along with the cubes. Cubes caught in the ice maker's crusher blades will be chopped and dispensed as crushed ice even if you've selected cubes. This should stop a few days after the setting switch. If it doesn't, clean the bin.

    Cleaning

    • Cleaning out the bin removes accumulated crushed ice particles. Open the freezer. Lift the ice bin up, and slide it forward to remove the bin from the freezer. Pick out any clumps of crushed ice you find in the bin. Clean the ice bin with hot water to melt accumulated ice. Dry the bin with a towel because any water left on the bin will freeze. Push the bin back into place when done cleaning.

    Next Steps

    • After you've cleaned out the ice bin, allow your ice maker up to 24 hours to create new ice. Manually move the ice maker switch to crushed ice, then move it back to cubed. Hold a glass under the ice maker and depress the lever to dispense the cubed ice.
