My Kenmore 58642 Is Not Freezing Food or Making Ice

The Kenmore appliance model 58642 is a side-by-side refrigerator. Whether this unit is newly installed in the home or is being used regularly, problems with the freezer working properly sometimes crop up. When this happens there is no need to call a professional. Troubleshoot the appliance to identify the problem and plot a course to rectify it.
  1. Newly Installed

    • A recently installed side-by-side refrigerator will not immediately be capable of making ice or freezing food. It takes 24 hours for the unit to cool enough to handle those tasks. During the 24-hour cool down period, the freezer door should not be opened or it will prolong the cooling time.

    Blocked Air Vents

    • The refrigerator and freezer remain cool by circulating air between the two sides. This is accomplished via air vents on the wall that divide the two sides. Blocked vents can warm the freezer, preventing it from freezing food and making ice. Open the refrigerator and freezer side of the unit. Move any items that are up against the wall of the unit, which is where the vents are located. This will get the air circulating again so that the freezer is cold enough to work properly.

    Temperature Control

    • If the temperature setting in the freezer is not cold enough, ice production and freezing foods will not be possible. Check the temperature control to ensure it is set within the accepted range of the appliance's guidelines. The controls are on the refrigerator side on the upper back wall. On the control knob, the warmest setting it “1” and the coldest setting is “6,” with the default setting being “4.”

    Icemaker Off

    • Once the freezer is cool enough to freeze food, the problem of no ice production may persist. The ice maker has its own power switch, which is the arm. If the arm is raised, the ice maker is powered off. If the arm is lowered, the ice maker is powered on. Look in the freezer and move the icemaker arm down if necessary.
