How to Fix an Ice Maker on a GE Eterna Series

General Electric specifies in the owner's manual that your Eterna refrigerator can make and hold 130 cubes of ice daily. An individual or small family might not ever go through that many cubes because the ice maker is constantly replenishing the ice supply. The large storage bin looks almost bottomless, in line with the overall large capacity of some 25.8 cubic-foot Eterna models. However, when you press the ice dispenser on the door, you might be surprised and confused as to why your unlimited supply of ice cubes has unexpectedly dried up. GE recommends five troubleshooting steps before calling for service.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the side of the refrigerator that holds the ice maker — the left — on most Eterna models. Find the power switch at the top of the ice-making component, which looks like a wall light switch. Flip or press the switch to the "On" or letter "I" setting. If the ice maker is new, was put in a vacation mode or the switch was accidentally set to the "Off" or letter "O" position, the unit will not produce ice cubes.

    • 2

Time the ice maker from the present moment, if the freezer compartment is warm. Wait 24 hours to give the compartment and ice maker enough time to cool back down. Though the Eterna ice maker can produce 100 to 130 ice cubes in a 24-hour period, it does on cycles of about seven cubes at a time. If you have used all the ice, maybe for a party or large gathering, the ice maker needs time to automatically restock.

    • 3

Use a spatula or your clean hands to level ice cubes that have created a "tower" of ice. This causes the ice maker to prematurely shut down before completely refilling the entire volume of the bin.

    • 4

Press the power switch to the "Off" or "O" position, if ice cubes are stuck in the ice maker unit. The green power light might also blink on and off as an indicator of this problem. Manually remove the cubes, then turn the power switch back to the "On" position.

Find the water supply valve that runs to the back of the Eterna refrigerator, to make sure the ice maker is getting adequate water flow. Depending on the setup of your kitchen, the valve may be under your sink or somewhere else near the back of the refrigerator. Carefully and slowly turn the valve in the counterclockwise direction, to the left, and listen for the water flowing through the hose. Make sure it is all the way open.
