A Rapid Clicking Noise in the Freezer of the GE Profile Side-by-Side

General Electric Profile side-by-side refrigerator-freezers produce an array of sounds during the course of operation. The damper door may cause barking, woofing or howling sounds, reports GE. In addition, chirping, gurgling, boiling and knocking sounds are also normal. A rapid clicking noise in the freezer, however, may be a routine sound or indicate a problem with the appliance.
  1. Compressor

    • The compressor may be responsible for the clicking noise in the freezer of a GE Profile side-by-side. Some compressor sounds are normal, such as pulsating noises or high-pitched hums. Rapid clicking noises as the compressor starts is symptomatic of a compressor-related problem, states the website Appliance 411.

    Main Board

    • A faulty main board can cause a rapid clicking noise in the freezer. The main board regulates the temperature for the freezer and the refrigerator. Neither will stay cool when the board needs servicing. You can replace the board yourself or hire an appliance technician.

    Water Valve

    • The water valve may also be the cause of the freezer’s rapid clicking noise. If the freezer has an automatic ice dispenser, it makes clicking sounds as the dispenser fills with water. This sound is normal - as long as the dispenser continues to provide ice. If no ice is produced, the dispenser may be faulty.

    Other Considerations

    • GE cites other explanations for rapid clicking noises in the freezer. If the power was recently out, the compressor may be trying to restart itself, which should not take longer than five minutes. The freezer also makes clicking noises when the defrost timer turns on and off.
