How to Flush Gallons of Water From a Refrigerator Filter

Many newer refrigerator models offer a water and ice cube dispenser built into the door's assembly. This convenient drinking water supply filters through a refrigerator filter, commonly found in the front base grille. The refrigerator filter, constructed of carbon, can remove a number of different water contaminants. Newly installed refrigerator filters must have gallons of water flushed through them. The flushing procedure removes excess carbon deposits that might cause a sharp, unpleasant taste in the water.

Instructions

  Remove the front base grille from the refrigerator.

  Visually locate the old filter inside the base grille. Remove the old filter by pressing the adjacent release button or turning its knob by a quarter of a turn, depending on the refrigerator model.

  Insert a new refrigerator filter into the empty space. Make sure it is secured in place with no warping of the filter's shape.

  Visually locate the output tubing extending from the filter to the refrigerator. This tubing should lead to the water and ice cube dispenser. Press on the tube's outer fitting ring to unlock it. Detach the tubing from the fitting.

  Extend the tubing into a bucket.

  Activate the refrigerator's water dispenser. Let the water move through the filter and into the bucket. Run the water until approximately 3 to 4 gallons have traveled into the bucket. This usually takes a few minutes.

  Terminate operation of the water dispenser. Discard the bucket's water into a sink.

  Gently push the output tubing back into its fitting until it clicks into place.

  Run the refrigerator's water dispenser and taste test the water.
