My 17.5 Cubic Foot GE Freezer Stopped Freezing

A 17.5 cubic foot freezer is a medium-sized appliance that runs on a standard home 120V electrical outlet. General Electric makes freezers in all sizes from small to large, and they are little different in operation from other manufactured freezers.
  1. Electrical Power

    • When a GE freezer stops working there are several troubleshooting steps available to the homeowner. First check to see that the power is on. A freezer uses substantial electricity when the compressor is operating and if other appliances are running on the same circuit, a breaker could be tripped, shutting off the power.

    Breaker Box

    • The breaker box is typically located in the basement or utility closet. If the switches aren't labeled, then look for one that is facing outward instead of inward toward the center. Push it inward to re-set it. Test the outlet into which the freezer is plugged by plugging in another appliance, such as a fan. If the fan works, then you know the outlet works and the freezer is receiving power.

    Multi-Meter Test

    • You can also test the outlet with a multi-meter set to AC. Push the prongs into the outlet holes and see if the meter reads between 110 and 120V. If it reads less then 110V the unit may not be receiving enough power to allow the compressor to come on even though the light inside works. If this is the case a qualified electrician should check your electrical system.

    Moving the Freezer

    • Moving the freezer to another circuit may solve the problem. Do not use an extension cord to plug it to another outlet, as this reduces the electrical power available to the freezer. Let the freezer set for two to three hours unplugged and then reconnect it. If the condenser overheated and shut down, it will have time to cool off and restart. If the condenser continues to overheat it will need to be replaced.

    Other Areas

    • Dirty condenser coils or running the freezer in a room in which the temperature is below 60 degrees F. may cause the unit to shut down. Wipe around the coils with a damp rag, and make sure the air temperature is high enough. Occasionally the temperature control will get jarred when moving food in and out. Check to see that it is set properly. Poor door seals will allow warm air in and cold air out. Examine the rubber seals for flaws and feel around the edges for escaping cold air.
