My Kenmore Coldspot Water Faucet Stopped

Coldspot was the name used by Sears for its house brand of refrigerators until 1977, when the name was phased out in favor of the company's Kenmore brand. The water faucet built into the freezer compartment door of your Sears Kenmore brand fridge provides instant access to cold, filtered water at the touch of a button. Repairing the dispenser, should it stop working, involves inspecting several parts of the refrigerator to troubleshoot the cause of the problem.
  1. Freezer Door Ajar

    • Open the freezer door and move any bulky items to the back, checking that nothing in the door shelves is striking the shelves inside the compartment. The water dispenser automatically stops providing water when the freezer door is left open, even a few inches. The door is completely closed when the rubber door seal touches the door frame.

    Empty Tank

    • Instead of drawing water directly from your home's plumbing every time the dispenser is activated, Kenmore refrigerators store and chill roughly 3 liters in a tank at the back of the fresh food compartment before it is supplied to the dispenser. If the faucet is used a lot during a short period of time, it may take several minutes for the tank to refill.

    Clogged Filter

    • Natural minerals in your home's water supply accumulate in the filter cartridge over time, causing the flow of water into the refrigerator to become restricted. Purchase a new cartridge from your local hardware store if the existing filter has been in use for more than six months, then install it in the slot beneath the freezer compartment door. A light located beside the filter slot on some models indicates when the existing cartridge needs changing.

    Water Line

    • Move the refrigerator forward so you can access the water supply line running from the back of the appliance to the shut-off valve on the wall. Make sure that the pipe is as straight as possible, with no kinks or tight turns, and double-check that the shut-off valve is in the open position. If everything appears normal, shut off the water and unscrew the pipe from the valve. Clean out any debris caught in the filter screen just inside the supply pipe.
