Can a Refrigerator Seal Be Replaced?

The refrigerator seal is the rubber lining around the refrigerator doors that helps keep air from inside the refrigerator escaping outside. These seals can fail over time, but replacing them is a common practice and in most cases you can even complete the project yourself. Always try to buy a replacement seal from the manufacturer of the refrigerator to get the proper type and size.
  1. Seal Failure

    • When a refrigerator seal fails, heat transfer begins to occur between the air inside the compartment and outside in your kitchen. Because heat always tries to reach an equilibrium, this means that warm air will be rushing into your refrigerator while cold air rushes out. This raises the temperature inside the fridge and requires the cooling system to overwork itself in an effort to cool down the system again.

    Taking Out the Old Seal

    • Examine your old seal to find out what kind of tools you need to use in order to take it off. Typically a flathead screwdriver will be the only thing you need, but some seals may be held in place by bolts or screws that require a different instrument. Remove one section at a time and keep track of all the screws you use, beginning at one corner. Treat the seal and surrounding door material very carefully so you do not bend or warp it.

    Preparing the New Seal

    • When you receive your new refrigerator seal, it will probably be bound up in packaging and slightly warped. A small amount of heat will loosen the seal and make it much easier to work with. Dip your seal in warm water for several minutes, or put it in the dryer for a short time in order to get rid of the packaging bends and ensure a better installation.

    Replacing the Seal

    • Replace the seal on one door at a time, screw by screw. Start at one corner and work around in a single direction. The replacement process should be very similar to taking the old seal out, only done in reverse. Keep an eye on any liners or plastic barriers that your refrigerator doors have so you do not displace them while you are working.
