How to Switch the Hinges on a Whirlpool Refrigerator

Switching your Whirlpool refrigerator's hinges to the opposite side of the cabinets allows you to open the doors in the opposite direction. You might decide to reverse the doors if they strike a wall, cabinet or another kitchen appliance while in their current positions. With the help of an assistant and common household tools, you can remove and reinstall the hinges and doors in the opposite direction in less than 20 minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator and remove all food from the door shelves of the fresh-food and freezer compartments.

    • 2

Remove the fresh-food door handle screws and place them to one side with the handle. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry out the plastic plugs protecting the handle screw holes on the opposite side of the door.

    • 3

Screw the handle to the opposite side of the door and push the plastic plugs into the handle's original screw holes. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the freezer compartment handle.

    • 4

Remove the metal door stop plate from the bottom of the fresh-food door and move it to the opposite side. Pry out the plastic plugs protecting the unused hinge holes on top of the fresh-food door.

    • 5

Unscrew the hinge plate screws on top of the freezer door. You might need to pry off or unscrew a plastic cover to access the screws on some models. Support the freezer below the hinge while you complete this step.

    • 6

Lift the freezer door off the center hinge and set it to one side.

    • 7

Remove the center hinge while supporting the weight of the fresh-food door. Lift the door off the bottom hinge and place it to one side.

    • 8

Remove the botton hinge and move it to the opposite side of the appliance. Hang the fresh-food door back in place while supporting its weight.

    • 9

Push the center hinge plate into the top of the fresh-food door and tighten the screws into the holes. The fresh-food door is now able to support its own weight.

    • 10

Stand the freezer door on the center hinge and push the top hinge plate into place. Tighten the screws to hold the freezer door in position and insert the plastic retaining plugs into the vacant hinge screw holes on top of the appliance. The doors are now reversed. Reconnect the power and return door items to their previous places.
