How to Fix Whirlpool Refrigerator Door Hinges

Remove the screws holding the hinge at the top of the appliance in place while an assistant supports the weight of the door. Lift the upper hinge plate out of the door and place it to one side. The door can be lifted off to reveal the lower hinge. Apply a small amount of silicon- or petroleum-based lubricant to the shaft of the hinge before reattaching the door.

Tighten the screws holding the door hinges to the body of the refrigerator if the doors do not fully line up with the openings of the freezer or fresh-food compartment. Turning the bolts clockwise improves the connection between loose parts. The bolts are often accessible at the top and bottom of the appliance.

Look for damaged parts or threaded bolts in the construction of the hinge. The metal plates used to hold the door in place at the top and bottom of the appliance could be bent or warped, making the door difficult to operate.
