How to Adjust the Controls on a GE Artica Refrigerator

General Electric, or GE, used to manufacture a line of refrigerators and freezers under the Artica brand. That line is now discontinued, but many American households still use the appliances for their refrigeration needs. All of the information you need to adjust the controls on your Artica refrigerator is inside the owner's manual. Although models can vary, most manuals address the temperature, ice maker and dispenser settings.
  1. Temperature Controls

    • The temperature controls in most Artica refrigerator models is inside the refrigerator. Open the door and look toward the top of the unit to see the control panel. You will see one set of buttons for the freezer and another set to control the refrigerator. Use the plus and minus buttons to set your desired temperature for each one. The factory setting is five for each part of the unit. Nine is the coldest setting and zero is the warmest. Remember that zero is just the least cold setting but does not turn off the electricity to the unit.

    Ice Maker Assembly

    • If your Artica refrigerator model came with an ice maker, you must turn it on separately to begin using it. Open the door the ice maker is in and set the power switch to “On” after the unit’s water line is connected to a working water valve. It takes 24 hours for most ice maker units to create a full bin of cubes. You can speed up production in some units for the next 48 hours by pressing the “Quick Ice” button on the dispenser in the refrigerator door.

    Ice and Water Dispenser

    • The dispenser in the door of your GE Artica refrigerator dispenses both ice and water. Place your cup or container under the dispenser chute before pushing any buttons. Press the “Crushed Ice” button or the “Cubed Ice” button, depending on which type of ice you’d like. For water, press the “Water” button. Remember that you don’t have to hold any of the buttons for ice or water to dispense. Press the button firmly but release the pressure immediately.

    Optional Settings

    • For your GE Artica refrigerator to cool properly, produce ice or dispense cool water, the doors must be closed whenever possible. An ajar door can change the unit’s ability to function. Some models come with a door alarm that alerts you to an open door. Press the “Door Alarm” button on the dispenser to set the length of time the door is open before you hear an alarm. There’s also a dispenser lock that prevents anyone from accidentally using the unit. Hold the “Lock Control” button down for three seconds to enable or disable the lock.
