How to Repair a KitchenAid Ice Flapper Door to Close

The flapper on the ice dispenser of your KitchenAid refrigerator is the paddle-shaped element you depress to dispense ice. The ice dispenser is located on the door, so getting ice is as simple as pressing a cup against the flapper. It is possible for these flappers to break. When that happens, you can open up the dispenser housing and fix the flapper.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cable of your refrigerator.

    • 2

Pull the plastic frame off the dispenser on the door of the refrigerator.

    • 3

Lift up the control panel of the dispenser and pull it slightly out of the housing to expose the panel wiring.

    • 4

Unplug the wiring harness from the rear of the control panel. Remove the control panel and set it aside.

    • 5

Remove the screws on the corners of the dispenser housing with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the housing out to remove it. You now have access to the flapper.

    • 6

Pull the flapper down to unhook it from its connectors and remove it. In many instances, the flapper will have simply become loose and needs to be reattached.

    • 7

Slide the top of the flapper back into its compartment until it snaps in place. If the flapper is cracked or otherwise broken beyond repair, you can fit a new one in its place instead.

    • 8

Replace the dispenser housing and screws.

    • 9

Plug in the controller wiring and fit the controller back into the housing.

    • 10

Fit the frame back over the dispenser.
