How to Replace the Evaporator Fan on a GE French Door

A GE french door refrigerator features two vertical doors on the front of the unit, as well as a pull-out bottom freezer. The refrigerator and freezer are powered by a compressor, which is cooled by an evaporator fan. If the fan isn't working, the whole refrigerator could shut down. If you need to replace a faulty fan, you can access it via the rear of the refrigerator.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your GE refrigerator and move it away from the wall. This will give you access to the rear panel.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the sides and corners of the rear panel of the refrigerator using a screwdriver. You will need either a Phillips or flathead screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the panel from the refrigerator. You can now access the internal components of the unit. The fan assembly will be visible in the compartment. It is identified by its blades.

    • 4

Unplug the wiring harness from the fan motor, which is located in the middle of the fan assembly, in between the blades. The harness plugs into a port on the motor and can be unplugged. You can use your fingers or pliers. The three or four wires in the harness will likely be blue, white and black in color.

    • 5

Remove the mounting screws holding the fan in place and remove the fan from the refrigerator. The mounting screws are located on the outside of the fan assembly.

    • 6

Fit a new fan in the compartment and replace the screws.

    • 7

Plug the wiring in to the port in the fan.

    • 8

      Replace the refrigerator compartment cover.
