The Top Freezer of My Refrigerator Is Warm at About 10 Degrees

As you use your refrigerator, you can experience several performance issues such as the temperature being too warm. This problem can be stressful because you do not want your food to go bad. When you encounter this issue, you can do some troubleshooting on your own to get it resolved.
  1. New Installation

    • If your refrigerator is a recent addition to your home, it might be warm because it hasn’t had enough time to cool. Once a refrigerator is installed for the first time, it takes a full 24 hours for the appliance to cool to the normal temperature. Also, if you have adjusted the temperature, it takes 24 hours for that setting to go into effect. To help expedite the cooling process, leave the doors close or open then as few times as possible.

    Recently Serviced

    • For a refrigerator that was recently serviced, it might still be in the diagnostic mode. If so, this is something that you can fix on your own. All you have to do is disconnect the power to the refrigerator for 30 seconds. Once that period has passed, you can reconnect the power and it should start cooling normally.

    Temperature Control Settings

    • All refrigerators, regardless of brand or model, have settings for temperature control. Some units have a knob, some have a slide and others have a digital setting panel. Take a look at the setting for the freezer. If it is not set cool enough, you can lower the setting. Even if it is set to cool, you can put it on a cooler setting. Some control panels even have an on/off button or switch, which you might need to activate if it is set to “off.” Changing the temperature setting does take 24 hours to go into effect.

    Air Flow Blocked

    • Refrigerators have vents that connect the refrigerator part to the freezer part. These vents circulate air between the two parts. If those vents get blocked by food, it can result in a warmer temperature in one part. The location of the vents varies by brand and model. Once you locate the vents, reposition any food that might be blocking the airflow.

    Empty

    • Keeping a decent amount of food in the refrigerator helps regulate the temperature. This is because the food holds the temperature in, which helps to keep it steady when the doors are opened. If you do not have a lot of items in the unit, it is more difficult to maintain the temperature when the doors are opened. Even adding in bottles of water can help keep the temperature cool.

    Door Seal

    • The door to the top freezer area might not be sealing properly, which can result in the warmer temperature. Take a look to see if anything is blocking the door from closing all the way. If you don’t see anything, close the door and then feel around the seal for escaping cold air. This lets you know where the air is coming from, if this is your problem.
