Repairing a GE Gold Refrigerator Freezer That Is Completely Frozen Over

A GE Gold refrigerator freezer unit that has frozen over is unpleasant to use and expensive to run. It can be difficult to find the time to defrost your freezer, though, particularly if you have a large amount of food in it that you don't want to see go to waste. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that any frozen food that remains above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for two hours or more should be thrown away, so you'll need to act quickly.
  1. Preparation

    • Turn the temperature control on the front of the freezer's door down and unplug it. Open the freezer compartment and place old towels or newspapers around the base of the door frame to absorb any water. Remove all food from the freezer and put it in an insulated cooler with ice.

    Defrost

    • Place saucepans of boiled water on top of an old towel inside the freezer compartment to speed up the defrosting process. Wait 20 minutes then use a blunt non-metallic object to chip away at the ice on the interior walls of the freezer. Put the ice you remove in the sink. Add fresh saucepans of boiling water if the ice in your freezer is particularly stubborn to remove.

    Clean

    • Once you've removed all the ice from the freezer section, use a sponge to wipe down any remaining water from the compartment. Then mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a quart of water and use a cloth applied with the solution to thoroughly clean the inside of the freezer. Wipe down the freezer compartment with a clean, dry towel and replace your food inside.

    Drain Hose

    • Some GE Gold freezer units have a drain hose that disposes of melting ice during the defrosting process. Remove the freezer's base grille with a screwdriver if it has a drain hose then take the plug out of the drain hose and position a large pan beneath it to capture water as the ice melts inside the freezer.
