Maytag Water Dispenser Hook Up Leaks

Maytag refrigerators connect to a water supply line to provide water to the water dispenser on the front of the refrigerator. The dispenser may leak due to improper use, filter clogs or a loose connection. A water leak leads to wasted water and can damage the area surrounding the refrigerator if it is not repaired promptly. For problems beyond basic troubleshooting, you should seek the help of an appliance professional, who will be able to diagnose and repair the defective appliance properly.
  1. Improper Use

    • The water dispenser releases water when the dispenser lever is pressed, and it continues to drip water from the water nozzle for up to three seconds after the lever is released. This is normal for the water dispenser and does not require repair. To deal with it, fill a cup two-thirds full, then allow the leakage to drain into the cup for the remaining three seconds.

    Clogged Filter

    • A clogged water filter won't properly regulate water flow when the water dispenser is used, and this can result in water leakage when you operate the dispenser. To deal with this problem, remove the old filter located inside the refrigerator and replace it with a new one. To ensure proper performance, be sure that you use only a Maytag-approved filter.

    Loose Connections

    • If your refrigerator is moved around, the water line connection can loosen over time. Tightening the compression nut located on the water line eliminates leaks by securing the refrigerator's connection to the water line. You will need to use a wrench to ensure a snug fit. The connection should be tightened until the compression nut stops rotating. Be careful not to overtighten the nut to avoid damaging the water line.

    System Flushing

    • Installing a new water filter causes excessive water buildup from the filter, requiring you to flush the refrigerator's water system to clear out water and prepare the water dispenser for use. Flushing the system requires pressing the water dispenser's lever for five seconds and releasing it at five-second intervals. Pressing and releasing the lever until 12 liters, or 3 gallons, of water is dispensed ensures that the water system is thoroughly flushed and eliminates leaks.
