The Freezer of My GE Refrigerator Is Making a Winding Sound

Your GE freezer produces a number of strange noises that can seem to indicate a problem during operation, but is in fact typical during the freezer's cooling or defrosting process. A winding or whirring noise occurs when the freezer section's temperature rises above the configured temperature, and continues to make a winding noise until the temperature drops down again. Alternatively, the buzzing noise may be due to the defrost cycle currently in use that produces the audible sound.
  1. Buzzing

    • Frequently opened freezer doors lose cold air stored in the freezer and results in rising temperatures. By reducing the frequency of opening your freezer door you simultaneously reduce the frequency and duration of the refrigerator's fan from running to lower the temperature.

    Whining

    • The light bulb in the freezer section warms up when the door is left open for longer than three minutes at a time, and causes the fans to run to cool off the light bulb. A cool bulb has a longer lifespan, as the likelihood of quickly burning out is reduced when it is kept cool.

    Winding

    • The QuickFreeze control increases the freezer's operating speed to quickly cool down food, whereas the CustomCool control allows you to enter a suitable cooling temperature for specific foods. Use of either control causes the freezer's fan to run at a high speed and produces the audible winding sound.

    Clicking

    • Gradual addition of food to the freezer keeps the freezer section at its configured temperature, but a large supply of food temporarily throws off the freezer's temperature. The freezer detects the rise in temperature and automatically turns on the fans to lower its storage temperature. The fans slow down and eventually stop once the temperature is reduced to the correct level.

    Hissing

    • The defrost mode for the freezer melts the ice until the defrost timer finishes, and can produce a buzzing noise when the melted ice drips onto the defrost heaters.
