A Latch Part Is Broken on My GE Ice Maker

Your GE ice maker’s only duty is to provide ice for your drinks, your homemade ice cream and the occasional first aid emergency. It may seem like a small thing, but when it won’t work, it can put a big damper on your plans. Depending on which latch you’re talking about, you have to replace either the dispenser or maker assembly to get your ice maker back on track.
  1. Which Latch?

    • If an owner says “A latch part is broken on my GE ice maker,” it can be difficult to figure out what part he’s talking about. Some ice makers have a rake that moves the ice from the bin into the chute to your container. You might call that a latch. You might also be referring to the lever that some units use to dispense the ice when you press your glass or container with it.

    Before You Assume

    • Before you assume that your latch is broken, ask yourself how long ago the ice bin was emptied. It takes 24 hours for the ice bin to make ice after being emptied, which may be why your latch isn’t working. You should also open the bin and check the cubes. Old ice can freeze together and make it difficult for the cubes to dispense, also making the latch look broken.

    Repairs

    • If it really is your latch causing the problem, you need to replace it. Depending on your model, you can buy the specific part separately and use your service guide to help you install it. However, many models don’t have either the lever or the rake as a separate part. You’ll either have to replace the entire ice maker assembly inside the unit or the entire ice maker dispenser in the door.
