Inspect the Damage

• Examining the broken wheel will give you a clear idea of the work needed. To see the wheel better, empty the refrigerator of all food and drink, turn off the water supply and empty the ice maker storage bucket. Drain the water dispenser into a large container until it runs dry and unplug the power cord. Carefully move the refrigerator forward and tip it to one side to take the pressure off the broken wheel. Slip a wooden block under the fridge to hold it in position. The plastic roller might be cracked, crushed or missing from the appliance, causing it to rock. If the appliance is moved regularly, make sure there is no debris restricting the wheel's movement.

Patch the Problem

• If the wheel is causing the appliance to lean, consider slipping a small block of wood beneath the appliance as a temporary measure to restore the balance. Normally, GE refrigerators lean back slightly to make the door swing closed under its own momentum. Adjust the remaining wheels with a socket wrench to ensure the refrigerator stays functional while the wheel is missing.

Replace the Wheel

• Replacement parts are available from GE or numerous independent and chain companies that stock appliance parts. Purchase a replacement for the damaged wheel and swap the parts at home to save on installation costs. Remove what remains of the existing, damaged wheel by turning the leveling bolts. Slip the new wheel in place, tighten the bolts and set the refrigerator back up. Think about calling a technician if you are uncomfortable making the repair yourself. It helps to have the refrigerator's model number on hand.

Avoiding Damage

• GE refrigerator wheels are usually sturdy and capable of supporting the weight of the appliance plus a full load of food. Moving the refrigerator across rough concrete or uneven wood floors is often enough to bend or break the plastic roller; always move the appliance slowly and with care.
