Unplug your refrigerator.
Pull the outer plastic frame out of the dispenser housing. You can do this with your fingers, but it may be easier to pry it out with a flat-head screwdriver.
Pull the dispenser control panel out so the rear wiring is exposed. If the problem lies with the control panel, unplug the wiring from the rear of the control panel and remove the old control panel. Plug the wiring into a new control panel (available from the manufacturer) and fit the controller back in the housing. If the problem isn't with the control panel, remove it and proceed to the next step.
Remove the screws on the corners of the dispenser housing and remove the dispenser housing. If the housing was cracked or damaged, you can fit a new housing in its place. If the problem lies with the flapper, proceed to the next step.
Pull down the plastic flapper lever (the component that is depressed to dispense water or ice) to unhook it. You can fit a new flapper in the dispenser and push it up into the unit to secure the flapper.
Replace the housing, control panel and outer frame.
