How to Replace Compressor Mounts On a Fridge

If you notice your refrigerator making an unusually loud noise, yet it's still working perfectly fine, you most likely have a problem with your compressor mounts. The compressor is part of the refrigeration system in these appliances. Because compressors generate a good deal of vibrations while they do their job, they are isolated from the refrigerator frame by rubberized mounts. Over time, these mounts can disintegrate, leaving you with a noisy fridge. With a few simple tools, you can replace compressor mounts on a fridge yourself.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the refrigerator at the main circuit breaker or by unplugging it from the socket, if you can reach it safely.

    • 2

Move the refrigerator back away from the wall or anything that may be behind it so that you can access the rear of the appliance.

    • 3

Remove the access panel with a screwdriver, socket wrench or hex-head screwdriver, if needed, to access the compressor.

    • 4

Locate the compressor on the back of the appliance. These are usually cylindrical in shape. There will be pipes connected to the side of the compressor. The compressor mounts are located at the perimeter of the compressor. There will usually be three to four mounts.

    • 5

Remove the clip or screw on top of one of the compressor mounts.

    • 6

Insert a block of wood underneath the compressor. Lift up on the wood to raise the compressor. While the compressor is raised, slip off the old compressor mount and replace it with a new one. Lower the compressor. Secure the mount with the bolt, clip or screw. Repeat this process for the other mounts, one at a time.

    • 7

Replace the access cover, if needed.

    • 8

Return the refrigerator to its original location and restore the power.
