Tappan Refrigerator Diagnosis

The Tappan company started producing appliances in 1889 and now offers high-quality refrigerators through the Electrolux corporation. Side-by-side and top-mount refrigerators are the two primary models Tappan produces. Every now and then, a refrigerator experiences problems such as irregular temperatures, stops in operation and unusual noises. Knowing how to diagnose your refrigerators problem could save you time, money and heartache.
  1. Operation

    • If a side-by-side or top-mount Tappan refrigerator stops operating, check to see if the unit is plugged in properly. Two other possibilities for a halt in operation are the freezer control being off or the unit being in the middle of a defrost cycle, which lasts approximately 20 minutes. Sometimes the refrigerator's compressor stops. This means it is making way for the thermometer's set temperature; to maintain the thermometer's constant temperature, the compressor must make periodic pauses. If the compressor runs too much, the thermostat is not properly set.

    Noise

    • When refrigerator owners hear unusual noises emanating from their Tappan refrigerators, it usually requires only minor maintenance. Sources of noise are the usually the refrigerator's tubes, compressor and shelving. Tubes and shelving are easily fixed by adjusting the tubing and shelf railing. If a compressor makes an internal noise, a homeowner must replace the compressor or have an expert look at it. However, compressors operate at high head pressure if the refrigerator's condenser does not receive enough airflow. Makes sure the refrigerator's condenser has unobstructed airflow to remedy this problem.

    Side-by-Side Dispensers

    • If the side-by-side refrigerator's ice dispensers is not producing ice, check to see if the freezer temperature is too warm. This results from not closing the freezer door completely or an overloaded motor, which stops cooling the unit. Other possibilities are a closed valve to the plumbing system – which also affects water dispensing – and ice cubes freezing to each other in the ice machine. Sometimes ice melts due to temperature fluctuations and refreeze to created a single block of ice. If water from the refrigerator's water dispenser has an odd taste, it may be due to a faulty connection to the building's water system.

    Temperatures

    • When temperatures are too cold in a Tappan refrigerator's freezer and refrigeration spaces, it is primarily the result of faulty temperature control. The freezer control determines the temperature within the freezer, while the refrigerator control sets the refrigerator's climate. Warm temperatures happen due to unclosed doors or control settings. Sometimes the temperature outside the refrigerator affects the climate within the unit. Warm and humid climates cause moisture and frost to build up inside the refrigerator.
