Kenmore Refrigerator Leaks From Dispenser When I Shower

Problems with the water pressure are often the reason for intermittent leaks from a Kenmore water dispenser. If water only leaks when someone is in the shower, low pressure is likely to blame. Identifying this problem and exploring other possibilities at home could save a plumber’s visit’s cost. In most cases, there is a simple solution.
  1. Water Pressure

    • Kenmore recommends water pressure between 20 and 100 pounds per square inch for proper water dispenser operation. Low pressure or a sudden drop from switching on the shower could cause water to drip out of the dispenser. If your home has a pressure adjuster installed near the meter, turning the stem a few times clockwise increases pressure. Call a plumber if your home does not have a pressure valve.

    Trapped Air

    • Air pockets in the supply line or water tank sometimes cause the water dispenser to splutter or leak. Take a large container and run the dispenser for about three minutes. The nozzle coughs as trapped air is expelled from the system. The change in water pressure caused by the shower coming on could cause a leak if there are air pockets. The tank takes a few minutes to refill after being drained.

    Defective or Blocked Filter

    • With a filter cartridge installed, the minimum pressure requirement is increased to 35 PSI. Kenmore suggests replacing the filter, which is usually located in the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment every six months. Filters accumulate natural minerals and occasionally are blocked, leading to reduced water pressure. Clear the lines of air bubbles after installing a new filter.

    Remove the Filter

    • Take the filter in the top right corner of the fresh food compartment out of the appliance and installing the blue bypass cap. You won't receive filtered water but it might be enough to temporarily stop the leak. To remove, pull down the cover and turn the filter counterclockwise until it releases. Without a filter, the dispenser is capable of operating at 20 PSI. You don't have to replace the filter – the bypass cap is safe to use long-term.
