How to Change Danby Door Swings

Kitchen layouts don't always match the design of kitchen appliances, causing a headache when planning the room. Reversing the door of your Danby refrigerator allows you to install the appliance in a greater variety of locations – you might find the door hits a wall the way it is configured when purchased. Before you begin, clear the fridge and freezer doors of jars, bottles and other breakable items.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the thermostat to zero and unplug the power cord. Carefully tip the appliance backward, raising the front legs off the ground, with the help of an assistant, if necessary.

    • 2

Unscrew the two front legs using an adjustable wrench and remove them.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the lower hinge assembly in place and remove the hinge assembly.

    • 4

Pull downward on the refrigerator door while your assistant supports the appliance in a tilted position. Set the door to one side.

    • 5

Remove the screws for the middle hinge, between the refrigerator and freezer doors, if present, and remove the freezer door by pulling downward.

    • 6

Remove the hinge on top of the appliance and move it to the opposite side, then reverse the door plug and bushing on the top and bottom of the freezer and refrigerator doors to prepare both for hanging in the reversed position.

    • 7

Push the freezer door back into position and replace the middle hinge. Check that the door is level before tightening the bolts.

    • 8

Replace the refrigerator door and the lower hinge. As with the freezer, confirm that the door is level before tightening the bolts.

    • 9

Reinstall both of the front leveling legs and lower the appliance to the ground.

    • 10

Reconnect the power, turn the thermostat back to its original position and replace the items on the door shelves to complete the reversal process.
