How to Fix the Air Balance in a Refrigerator

Refrigerators and freezers feature manual controls that let you determine the temperature inside the box. But despite setting a specific temperature, an air imbalance can occur inside your refrigerator. This results in one area of your refrigerator (or freezer) being colder than other areas. Simple methods can help fix the air balance and keep your food fresh.

Tighten the seal around the door. Breaks or cracks in the seal around your refrigerator door can cause an air imbalance. Remove the worn or broken seal and replace it with a new one. Write down your refrigerator's make and model and purchase a new seal from a home improvement store. A series of screws around the refrigerator's perimeter holds the seal in place. Loosen screws to remove and replace the seal.

Check the refrigerator's balance. Slopes or uneven flooring can also contribute to an air imbalance inside the refrigerator. Place a level on top of the refrigerator. If the refrigerator tilts, adjust the legs/wheels or place a piece of cardboard underneath the legs to level the appliance. Depending on your refrigerator, use a screwdriver or wrench to adjust the legs to the appropriate height.

Keep the freezer and refrigerator doors closed. Repeatedly opening the door or keeping the door opened for prolonged periods can cause air to leak out and create an imbalance.
