The Weight of a Refrigerator on Laminate Floors

Laminate floors are an alternative to hard wood and other types of flooring material. They look like hard wood floors, but are constructed with several materials bonded together, rather than actual solid wood. Laminate floors are then covered with images of real wood to give the appearance of hard wood. They typically cost less than hard wood floors, making them a popular option for budget-conscious homeowners. Some people install laminate floors in the kitchen. A refrigerator and other appliances that sit on the laminate floors may damage the floors over time.
  1. Weight

    • Most refrigerators weigh around 200 lbs., according to the Sophisticated Edge website. Older refrigerators weigh closer to 250 lbs. Some refrigerators can weigh as much as 500 lbs., but those are rare cases. Some people weigh more than 200 lbs. and they are able to walk on laminate floors without an issue. So, the laminate floors can support the heavy weight of a refrigerator, though other issues might still arise.

    Denting

    • Denting is one problem that can arise over time from a heavy refrigerator placed on top of a laminate floor. The weight from the fridge can cause dents to form in the flooring where the feet of the appliance tough the ground. Floors that have become soft due to wetness, mold or just poor quality are especially more susceptible to this problem than stronger real wood or tile floors.

    Scratching

    • Scratching is another issue that can occur from a refrigerator on a laminate floor. The appliance's feet or bottom might leave scratches. Even if the floor can withstand the weight of the refrigerator with no issues, scratching is a concern, especially when moving or installing the fridge. To avoid scratching, do not drag the appliance across the floor. Also, try not to drag it to move when cleaning or installing.

    Solutions

    • A few easy solutions exist for avoiding denting, scratching or other issues from placing a refrigerator on a laminate floor. One thing to try is to place a flat towel or piece of cardboard under the fridge, so it never actually touches the floor. Make sure the protective layer is flat so the refrigerator is level. You can also buy rubber squares to place under each foot of the refrigerator.
